David Austin Talavera : Illustration & Design

About

As an illustrator and graphic designer i believe a piece of work should carry across a clear message that the viewer can relate to, but should be both inspiring and fun. These are factors that i try to instil in all of my work, whether it’s a clean, subtle piece of typographic layout or a bold creative poster i always try to create something that catches the eye and makes the you want to come back and look at it time and time again.

After working primarily in typography during my early design education I have found in recent years my work has shifted toward a very illustrative style that implements typographic elements in to it, as such it has become a coherent hybrid of both illustration and typography that i enjoy immensely.

My working style could be described as bold, colourful and eye-catching and is heavily influenced by music, more specifically the psychedelic rock era, which gave us vivid, striking, poster and album sleeve designs along with imagery that infused stark powerful colours and organic typography. Other influences include the work of design pioneers like Neville Brody, Peter Blake, Roy Lichtenstein, and the father of the movie title sequence - Saul Bass, whose style drew on the primary colours and basic ‘cut-out’ silhouette imagery of the Russian constructivist period. I am also inspired by modern illustrators like Benjamin Gudel and Frank Miller who use simple, yet sophisticated line drawings and typography and blend it with a clever use of colour to create beautiful work.

Along with music, retro and film related posters, i love to work on anything that has a deep historical context, however whatever project comes along i will always give it everything i’ve got and more. I believe it is important to have a keen interest in all aspects of art and design and stay aware of the current design environment and trends, this way work will always remain vital and fresh.
